If you frequently work on projects that share the same structure (tasks, sections, or team members) creating a project template can save you time and keep things consistent.
Templates include everything in a project: tasks, sections, assignments, and more. You can fully customize a template to fit your workflow.
Once a template is created, anyone on the template team can use it to start a new project - as many times as needed.
This article will cover:
- Creating a Template
- Creating a Template from an existing project
- Creating a Template from within a project
- Using a Template
- Using a public BasicOps Template
Creating a Template
To create a new template follow these steps:
- Select Projects in the Left Sidebar.
- Select Templates.
- Select Add Template.
- Fill out the dialog and then select Add Project Template.
- Add the tasks, sections, discussions, etc. that you want in your template.
Creating a Template from an existing project
If you have a project that contains all (or most) of the items you want and often use, you can create a template from that project.
- Select Projects in the Left Sidebar.
- Select Templates.
- Click the down arrow next to Add Template.
- Select a project from the dropdown.
- Enter a name and description.
- Select Add Project Template when you are done.
Creating a Template from within a project
- Select a project.
- Select the Action button next to the project title.
- From the dropdown menu, select Create Template from Project. (Image 1)
- Complete the dialog. (Image 2)
- Select Add Project Template.
Using a Template
Once you have created a template, it will be listed in the Templates section. Here is where you can Edit, Copy, Deactivate, or Delete the Template.
To Edit, Duplicate, or Delete a Template:
- Select Action on the right of the template.
- From the dropdown, you can select Edit, Duplicate, or Delete.
Selecting Edit will open the template in full view. Here is where you can edit the content of the template before it's created.
If you want to copy the template and avoid recreating everything from scratch, you can duplicate it.
Caution: Make sure you don’t need a template before deleting it. Deleting a template removes all information associated with that template. You cannot undo this action and you cannot restore a deleted template.
Tip: When creating a template, you can adjust the due dates to be any number of workdays in advance. If creating a template from an existing project, each task can have its due date changed through the Edit Template feature.
Using a Public BasicOps Template
BasicOps offers public Templates for anyone to import into their workspace. You can find each of these Templates here. If you want to save time creating a Template, our public Templates are the place to go.
To use a public Template:
- Select a template from the public Template page.
- Select Use Template. (Image 1)
- Log in to your BasicOps account.
- Select View Project to see your Template in action. (Image 2)
